Friday 15th to Saturday 23rd June
Aims: to experience the northern reaches of the Birmingham Canal Navigation system with fellow boaters and visit the CRT workshops at Bradley, including historical talk and presentation en route.
Friday evening 15th June, meet at Wolverhampton
Boats to meet and moor on visitor moorings either side of Broad Street bridge. An informal evening gathering on the embankment at side of moorings above the Wolverhampton top lock is planned.
Evening get together at the Great Western pub in Sun Street.
Day 1 Saturday 16th June, to Pelsall Junction (14 miles 0 locks 5 hrs)
Boats to leave Wolverhampton and turn on to the Wyrley & Essington canal, travel through Wednesfield, Sneyd, Goscote, Little Bloxwich and moor at Pelsall Common.
Day 2 Sunday 17th June, to Anglesey basin (5 miles 0 locks 2 hrs)
Leave Pelsall Junction and continue to Catshill Junction, Turn left on the Anglesey branch and moor in Anglesey Basin.
Day 3 Monday 18th June, to Longwood Junction (8 miles 0 locks, 3 hours)
Leave moorings and return to Catshill Junction to take the Daw End canal to Longwood Junction where a fish & chips evening and Historical talk/presentation is planned at the Longwood Boat Club.
Day 4 Tuesday 19th June, to Moorcroft Junction (8 miles 9 locks 6 hrs)
Leave the Longwood Boat Club and descend the Rushall locks (assisted by BCNS lock-wheelers), turn right at Rushall Junction onto the Tame Valley canal to Ocker Hill. Turn right on the Walsall canal and moor at Moorcroft Junction.
Day 5 Wednesday 20th June, to Walsall (4 miles 0 locks 2-3 hrs)
A morning 1.5 mile leisurely walk to the Bradley workshops lock gate manufacturing facility. During this walk and visit we will be joined by a local canal historian.
We plan to walk on a well defined footpath up the remaining lock flight levels, then on the original canal embankment to the Bradley workshops where we will be met by CRT staff and allowed to tour the lock gate manufacturing facility.
After the visit, an optional detour around the Wednesbury Oak Loop and Gospel Oak Branch will take us back to our moorings.
We plan to leave moorings early afternoon and travel to Walsall town basin.
Day 6 Thursday 21st June, to Wednesfield Junction (8 miles 8 locks 6-7 hrs)
Leave Walsall town basin and ascend Walsall locks (here again we will be assisted by BCNS lock-wheelers), turn left at Birchills Junction and continue on the Wyrley & Essington canal. Moor in or around the Bentley Arm outside the Nickelodeon pub.
Day 7 Friday 22nd June, to Tipton (7 miles 0 locks 2-3 hrs)
From Wednesfield Junction continue on to Horseley Fields Junction then turn left on the Birmingham Old Main Line and continue towards Tipton. Moor adjacent to the Neptune Centre at Tipton Green.
Day 8 Saturday 23rd June, to Titford (4 miles 6 locks 3-4 hrs)
Morning historical talk to be held at the Tipton library. After the talk, leave Tipton Green and continue back towards Birmingham on the Old Main Line to Oldbury Junction. Turn right to ascend the Oldbury locks (aka The Crow)
BCNS lock wheelers will assist on this flight and give advice on mooring.
A final get together evening with a Chinese takeaway and bar at the Titford Pumphouse is planned.
For those wishing to visit the Titford pools, advice on travelling there will be given.
* All moorings have been tried and tested. In some locations, we will need to breast up in 2 or 3 deep.
