Birmingham & Fazeley Canal


Immediately north of Old Turn Junction including Cambrian Wharf

Aston Business Park, between locks 8 and 9 on the Aston flight.  (Between locks 21 and 22 if you use Nicholson’s Guide lock numbers.)

At Cuckoo Wharf, just South of Salford Junction.

On either side of Wiggins Hill bridge, near Curdworth.

At Curdworth, just south of the Curdworth Tunnel.

Anywhere on the Fazeley side of Curdworth Tunnel.
For a long time we have said that once past the tunnel all is safe, and for overnight stays that remains the view.
However I have heard of a boat left between locks 10 and 11 being broken in to in Feb 2016, and it appears not to have been the first time.  I believe that the break ins have been when boats have been left unattended for days.
There is a presumption (unproven and not necessarily accurate) that these are related to the nearby caravan site.

Our advice at the moment is not to leave your boat there unoccupied for any prolonged period.

Water Points and Sanitary Stations

All of these have toilets, chemical toilet disposal and water unless otherwise noted.  Some have showers.

Minworth Top Lock.      Water point only, and with repeated vandalism, not always working

Notes on the Birmingham and Fazeley

The Birmingham and Fazeley Canal has three parts, the main line, the Digbeth Branch and the Coventry Canal Section

The Birmingham and Fazeley Canal Main Line.

Functionally this starts at Deep Cuttings junction, where it joins the BCN Main Line, down the Farmers Bridge flight, (13 locks in ¾ of a mile) and on to Aston Junction, where the Digbeth Branch comes off.

From Aston Junction, the canal goes down the Aston flight (another 11 locks in a little over a mile) to Salford Junction, where it joins Grand Union and Tame Valley, and then heads north east to Fazeley Junction.  It joins the Coventry Canal at Fazeley, and turns north west to join the detached part of the Coventry Canal at Whittington Brook.

The Digbeth Branch
provides a short cut from Aston Junction, down the Ashted Locks to Bordesley Junction on the Grand Union Canal.


  1.  On the Farmers Bridge flight, if your are on on a full length boat, keep an eye out for other full length boats, for there are a couple of pounds around the Post Office tower where where it is not possible for two full length boats to pass each other, as the modern buildings have restricted the passing space.
  2. On the Digbeth Branch there is nowhere to pass a boat going in the opposite direction between the first and second locks, including the Ashted Tunnel.  If you are coming in to lock 1 (going down) or lock 2 (going up) make sure there is not already a boat in the other lock.
  3. The lock numbers that you see on the canal differ from the numbers in the Nicholson guides, as the B&F renumbers the locks at every flight.

Some pedantry.

  1. The Birmingham and Fazeley actually starts at Farmers Bridge junction, where it joins the Newhall Branch of the Main Line.  The only remaining part of this branch is from Deep Cuttings Junction to Cambrian Wharf, and in practical terms most people call the first hundred yards the Birmingham and Fazeley.  To keep things simple, we are doing this as well.
  2. The Digbeth Branch terminates at Typhoo Basin (also known as Bordesley Basin), and the section from Proof House Junction to Bordesley Junction is part of the Grand Union canal.
